Ceramic coating isn’t permanent. Nor is it indestructible. It’s a durable coating that still requires maintenance – with proper care it can last 3-5 years, but without it, it degrades within 1-2 years. This guide explains every step of maintenance – from the first hours after application to annual renewal.

The first 7 days after application: the critical period

Ceramic coating chemically cures over the first 7 days. During this time, it’s especially sensitive:

  • Avoid rain and soaking – not a single drop of water should touch the vehicle in the first 24 hours
  • Don’t wash the vehicle for the first 7 days
  • Park in a garage or under a carport – direct sunlight in the first 24 hours speeds up curing, but heavy rain or dew can ruin it
  • Avoid extreme temperatures – neither hot sun nor severe frost
  • Bird droppings and insects – if they land within the first 7 days, remove them immediately with a damp microfiber cloth. After curing, they’re no longer a problem.

Proper washing: the foundation of longevity

The washing method is the most important factor for ceramic coating durability. Incorrect washing (especially automatic brush car washes) can destroy the ceramic coating within months.

The two-bucket method

This is the standard hand-washing method for protecting ceramic coating:

  1. Bucket 1 (washing): Clean water + pH-neutral shampoo
  2. Bucket 2 (rinsing): Clean water without shampoo – for rinsing the wash mitt before every pass
  3. Always wash from top to bottom
  4. For each section (roof, hood, side), take clean solution from bucket 1, and after each section rinse the wash mitt in bucket 2

This method ensures you never rub dirt back into the paint – the dirt goes into bucket 2, not back onto the car.

pH-neutral shampoo – essential

This is the most important thing when choosing a shampoo. Acidic shampoos (pH below 7) and alkaline shampoos (pH above 7) chemically attack the ceramic coating and break it down. Always choose:

  • pH-neutral shampoo (pH 6.5-7.5)
  • Wax-free shampoo without polishing agents
  • One labeled “safe for coatings” or “coating safe”

What to avoid?

  • Automatic brush car washes – absolutely forbidden. Brushes cause micro-scratches that destroy the ceramic coating
  • Acidic or alkaline cleaners – wheel cleaner, bug remover, iron remover without proper rinsing – dangerous for ceramic coating
  • High-temperature steam – some steam cleaners are too hot for ceramic coating
  • Neglect and long gaps between washes – accumulated dirt builds up and becomes difficult to remove

Annual maintenance

SiO2 topper or ceramic boost (once a year)

After 12 months, hydrophobicity begins to weaken. A SiO2 topper (also called ceramic boost or spray coating) is a liquid product applied to a clean, dry vehicle that refreshes the coating’s hydrophobicity for the next 6-12 months.

Application process:

  1. Wash the vehicle and dry it completely
  2. Spray the SiO2 topper onto one section at a time
  3. Spread it with a microfiber cloth
  4. Remove the excess with a second, dry microfiber cloth
  5. Leave it for 5-10 minutes to cure

Paint decontamination (once a year)

Over the course of a year, iron particles from brakes and industrial pollution accumulate on the paint, penetrating even through the ceramic coating. An iron remover (e.g., Koch Chemie Green Star or Gyeon Iron) chemically breaks them down.

Process: After washing, spray the iron remover onto the wet vehicle, wait 3-5 minutes (the product will turn purple – this is the dissolving iron particles), rinse with water. Safe for ceramic coating.

How do you know the ceramic coating is still working?

Signs of a functioning ceramic coating:

  • Water beading: When washing or in the rain, water gathers into beads and rolls off – it doesn’t stay on the surface
  • Self-cleaning effect: Dirt partially washes off by itself during rain
  • Gloss: The paint has a deep gloss, the color is vivid and clean
  • Easy washing: Dirt rinses off quickly during washing, it doesn’t stay stuck

When the ceramic coating stops working

Signs that the ceramic coating is no longer functional:

  • Water no longer beads up – it sheets flatly across the surface
  • Dirt sticks significantly more easily than before
  • Washing becomes harder and requires more effort
  • The paint is dull and lacks depth of gloss

When you notice these signs, it’s time for a SiO2 topper (refresh), or if 4-5 years have passed, for a fresh ceramic coating application.

Summary of ceramic coating maintenance steps

Frequency Activity Time
After every wash Drying with a microfiber towel (don’t let it air dry) 15-30 min
Every 2-4 weeks Hand washing with the two-bucket method 45-90 min
After one year (or as needed) SiO2 topper to refresh hydrophobicity 30-60 min
Once a year Decontamination with iron remover 20-30 min
After 4-5 years Fresh ceramic coating application 1-2 days (with a professional)
