A cigarette smoke smell in a car is one of the most stubborn odours to get rid of. Smoke gets into the seat fabric, headliner, carpets and even the ventilation system, so an air freshener only masks it for a few hours. This guide explains what actually works at home and when it is time for a professional deep clean with ozone treatment.

Why the smell lingers

Cigarette smoke contains tar and nicotine, which settle as a thin sticky film on every surface in the cabin. This film does not evaporate – it releases odour constantly, especially when the interior heats up in the sun. The worst-affected areas are:

  • the headliner – smoke rises and collects on the roof lining, which most people never clean,
  • seats and carpets – fabric absorbs odour like a sponge,
  • seat belts,
  • the ventilation system and cabin filter – the smell returns every time you turn on the fan,
  • the inside of the windows – a yellowish film that causes glare at night.

Step-by-step DIY method

1. Remove the source

Empty and wash the ashtray, remove any cigarette ends from pockets and gaps between seats, and take out the floor mats.

2. Vacuum thoroughly

Vacuum the seats, carpets, boot and gaps. Use a narrow nozzle and a brush to lift ash out of the fabric.

3. Wash hard surfaces

Wipe the dashboard, door panels, steering wheel and console with a mild interior cleaner. Clean the inside of the windows with glass cleaner – twice if needed, until the cloth stays clean.

4. Clean the fabric

Clean seats and carpets with a fabric cleaner and a damp cloth. Do not soak them – fabric dries slowly and mould can develop. Do not wet the headliner: the adhesive can fail and the lining may sag.

5. Replace the cabin filter

In smokers’ cars the cabin (pollen) filter is often saturated with odour. It is inexpensive, and in many cars you can replace it yourself behind the glovebox.

6. Neutralise the odour

A bowl of baking soda or activated charcoal left in the closed car for a few days absorbs part of the smell. Airing the car in the sun with the windows open also helps.

When DIY is not enough

If someone has smoked in the car for years, home cleaning usually only reduces the smell. That is when a professional interior deep clean makes sense, including:

  • hot-water extraction of seats and carpets, which pulls dirt and odour out of the depth of the fabric,
  • steam cleaning of hard surfaces, seams and air vents,
  • careful cleaning of the headliner with suitable products,
  • ozone treatment of the vehicle.

What is ozone treatment and is it safe?

Ozone (O₃) is a gas that breaks down odour-causing molecules and kills bacteria and mould. An ozone generator runs in the closed vehicle for anything from half an hour to several hours, depending on how strong the smell is. Ozone reaches places a cloth cannot – inside ventilation ducts and behind trim panels.

Important: ozone in high concentrations is harmful to people and animals. Nobody may be inside the car during treatment, and the car must be aired out thoroughly afterwards. Leave ozone treatment to a provider with the right equipment and experience.

Ozone works best after a deep clean. If you ozonise a dirty car, the smell will come back out of the fabric within weeks.

How much does smoke odour removal cost?

Detailers often offer ozone treatment as an add-on to an interior deep clean. Typical starting prices for a deep clean on Kardet range from about 70 € to 100 € depending on the country, and a heavily smoked car will usually carry a surcharge for the extra work. Is it worth it before selling?

Definitely. Smoke odour is one of the main reasons buyers lower their offer or walk away. The cost of cleaning is usually small compared with the difference in sale price. More tips in detailing before selling your car.
